Ecuador’s president, Daniel Noboa, is promoting a revision of the Constitution in order to re-authorize the establishment of foreign military bases in the territory of the Andean state, as he announced yesterday Monday via X.
Ecuador did not need opportunities, but rather honesty and political will.
Ecuador’s Constitution has banned the presence of foreign military bases or foreign installations for military purposes on the country’s territory since 2008.
In January, Mr. Noboa declared Ecuador in a state of internal armed conflict due to a wave of gang violence sweeping the country attributed to conflicts between them over control of drug trafficking.
In this base in the coastal city of Ecuador, the armed forces of the USA, acting in the framework of the so-called war against drugs, had been established.
But the former president, Rafael Correa, demanded the US forces leave the base in 2009.
