A report to the UN Secretary General will be drawn up by Maria Angela Holguin Queillar in the near future, as she announced shortly after the meeting she had with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis.

The personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Cyprus clarified in her statements that she is nearing the end of her mandate and for this reason she will prepare a report she will deliver to Antonio Guterres and will return to Cyprus after her consultations.

She underlined that her goal is to continue the effort until the last moment, in order to achieve the goal of resuming meaningful talks on the Cyprus issue. This is also the desire of both the Cypriot people and the United Nations and especially the Secretary General, she added.

Maria Holgin noted that she had a constructive meeting with the President of the Republic and explained many of the decisions she began to make, repeating at the same time that what needs to be done is for leaders to listen to civil society.

Asked about the possibility of a tripartite meeting, she said that the United Nations continues to push in this direction, emphasizing that dialogue is the only way to pave the way for a solution to the Cyprus issue.

She then went to the occupied territories where he had a meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar. The meeting lasted about 20 minutes. Leaving Mrs. Holgin did not make any statements.

Late in the afternoon, the personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General made a detailed account of all her contacts on the Cyprus issue by sending specific messages.

She emphasized that the two leaders face the dilemma of either maintaining the status quo, the easiest alternative, or decision-making to promote medium- and long-term horizons with stronger opportunities for smooth economic development.

After sixty years of division, the Secretary-General’s personal envoy said no progress would be made in just four months. She expressed surprise at Ersin Tatar’s public rejection of the tripartite meeting because, as she said, diplomacy should be given a chance.

In order to find a way to move forward, the two sides should also have the will to engage in dialogue, Mrs. Holgin added.

She expressed the belief that there is an opportunity for progress with strong support from the international community. The decision, she stressed, is in the hands of leaders who must be courageous.

Regarding incentives for the Turkish Cypriots to return to negotiations in connection with the confidence-building measures that President Christodoulides has announced, she said that the government has a clear picture and knows what can unblock the process.
