The European Union welcomes the appointment of Maria Ángela Holguín Cuéjar, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, as the UN Secretary General’s envoy to Cyprus.

As High Representative Josep Borell and Commissioner Eliza Ferreira point out in their joint statement, the appointment provides critical support in the search for common ground with the aim of returning to formal negotiations for a lasting settlement in Cyprus, a process that has not progressed since talks held in Crans Montana in 2017.

The EU remains fully committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, within the framework of the UN, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, the principles on which the EU is based and the acquis, the statement stressed.

Also, Josep Borrell and Elisa Ferreira underline that the EU is ready to play an active role in supporting all stages under the UN facilitation process, with all the appropriate means at its disposal.

Finally, they state that in today’s geopolitical context, security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, where common interests and opportunities can promote cooperation and common approaches, are more important than ever.
