At least 66 people have been killed this week in the fights that broke out among civilians, soldiers and members of the Shebab jihadist group in central Somalia, according to the authorities’ latest report released yesterday Tuesday.
The latest tally includes 51 Shebab fighters. The other 15 victims were members of the armed forces and armed civilians. According to the authorities, five jihadists fell into the hands of government forces alive.
Shebab, which swears allegiance to al-Qaeda, has often launched attacks on military bases, government buildings and facilities, hotels and civilians. The fighting broke out on Monday when members attacked the Baden area of Mudug district.
Meanwhile, members of Shebab demonstrated military vehicles deployed in the fighting yesterday. The day before, the jihadist organization claimed that its fighters had killed 53 pro-government paramilitaries. Shebab has been fighting for decades to take over the country. It controls large parts of southern and central Somalia.
African Union and US forces support the federal government in Mogadishu. Concerns have been raised after reports that outgoing Republican President Donald Trump is considering withdrawing all or most of the forces deployed in Somalia before leaving the White House next month.
