The CIA has launched a new campaign to recruit whistleblowers in China, Iran, and North Korea, following what it claims was a successful attempt to recruit Russians.
The US Secret Service has posted “instructions” in Chinese, Farsi, and Korean on its X Platform, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, LinkedIn, and DarkWeb accounts on how to safely contact it, a spokesman said.
Efforts on that front have been successful in Russia, and they want to make sure people in other authoritarian regimes know they are ready for work, the spokesman said.
The Chinese-language video posted on YouTube contains only written instructions and urges candidates to contact the CIA through its official website, using encrypted VPNs or the TOR network.
Candidates are asked to provide their name, location, and some form of contact that is not linked to their real identity, as well as information that could be of interest to the CIA. He warns, however, that the service does not guarantee that it will respond to them or that it will be done quickly.
The CIA’s thirst for information is growing as China expands its cooperation with Russia and Iran. Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are considered “hard targets” by the US intelligence community, meaning they are countries whose governments are difficult to penetrate.
North Korea’s nuclear program is another target for US intelligence, as is Russia’s supply of North Korean weapons for its war in Ukraine.
The Russian and Chinese embassies in Washington and Iran’s mission to the United Nations did not respond to a request for comment.
The CIA began recruiting Russians in 2022 by posting texts in Russian on social networking sites. In 2023, she continued this program, with videos containing information on how to contact her.
