US President Joe Biden approved $567 million in military aid to Taiwan, the White House announced.
The aid is yet another move by Washington to bolster the island’s military and raises the risk of further escalating tensions with China.
Although officially the US has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan, Washington is the island’s most important protector and the main supplier to its military.
China, which considers Taiwan a Chinese province destined to reunite a day with the mainland, has repeatedly demanded that the US government stop arming it.
The announcement said that Mr. Biden gave Secretary of State Anthony Blinken authority to direct the Defence Department’s $567 million in military equipment and services to Taiwan.
The announcement does not go into detail about the items or services that will be made available.
In April, Mr. Biden secured the passage of a law in Congress providing tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine, amid its war with Russia, as well as to Israel and Taiwan.
Taipei has repeatedly complained about delays in US arms deliveries, particularly upgraded F-16 fighter jets.
