The design and construction of new submarines for the Hellenic Navy are included in the cooperation agreement signed by the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems with the management company of Skaramangas Shipyards of shipowner Giorgos Prokopios, NAFS.

The two sides, according to the newspaper “Eleftheros Typos”, are committed to very close cooperation, which provides a vote of confidence in the Greek defence industry.

The extremely important cooperation agreement will have multiple benefits for the Hellenic Navy, as it reportedly provides for the support and upgrade of the capabilities of the four Greek MEKO 200 frigates, the maintenance, support, and repair of the Hellenic Navy’s submarines, including the upgrade of four 214-class submarines.

However, the two sides are not limited to the above framework of cooperation and, according to the same sources, they have already agreed to jointly proceed on other levels and programs, always focusing on the shipbuilding capabilities and activities of Scaramangas and the know-how and technology of the German company.

The Hellenic Navy is reported to be highly benefited from the conclusion of this cooperation agreement. At the same time, the strategic cooperation of the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems group with NAFS sends a message to the global industry, that the Skaramangas Shipyards have entered a new era dynamically and that the Greek economy is still on development paths.

It is recalled that in the spring the Skaramangas Shipyards announced their partnership with the Naval Group regarding the potential construction of the Gowind corvettes in Greece, as part of the Hellenic Navy’s program.
