Original News:
Terrible explosions took place on Thursday afternoon in the area of Nea Anchialos, where the major fire of Magnesia is still raging.
According to information from ERT, shells exploded in an ammunition depot of the Hellenic Air Force in the Karamba region, as the fire entered the military camp.
The fire reached the ammunition depot located about 4 miles from the Hellenic Air Force’s 111th Combat Wing due to very strong winds, although the military camp was guarded by fire engines.
The camp has been evacuated. Firefighters, as well as anyone else on the scene, have been evacuated.
Based on the ERT report, in the Karaba area, there are both overground and underground ammunition depots as well as fuel tanks, which belong to the 111th Combat Wing while, according to witnesses, the explosions were heard as far as Volos.
According to information, the depot contains 1000 and 2000 pound bombs and weapons such as HAARM missiles. The main mission of the 341 Squadron, which is subordinate to the 111th Combat Wing, is to suppress enemy air defence systems using AMRAAM missiles, AIM-9, bullets, etc.
They do not operate from the ground or from the air because they are afraid of explosions from weapons. Police forces are directing citizens to Volos, advising residents not to stay in Nea Anchialos.
According to magnesianews.gr, three powerful explosions took place, while it became known that windows were broken in Nea Anchialos, Mikrothebes, and elsewhere.
According to the commander of the Magnesia Fire Service, Evangelos Liakopoulos, barriers are created by the ground forces, so that the fire does not reach the settlements.
