Five years after imposing restrictions on arms exports to Turkey, Norway has decided to accept Ankara’s arms applications.
The path is paved for long-term security guarantees from the Group of Seven most developed industrialized countries (G7) to Ukraine, strengthening its defence against Russia and preventing Moscow from any future attacks against its neighbor.
According to a G7 announcement, the member countries agreed on an international and long-term military support framework for Kyiv.
In return, Ukraine will commit to improving governance measures to be achieved, inter alia, through judicial, financial reforms and enhanced transparency.
Commenting on the announcement, Joe Biden said the G7 made a clear statement that its support for Ukraine will be long-term, saying the G7 will provide Ukraine with significant military assistance as the country waits to join NATO. The future of Ukraine is in NATO, the US President emphasized.
Alongside him, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said these G7 pledges of long-term military aid to Kiev represented a major victory for his country’s security.
The Ukrainian delegation is returning to the country having achieved an important victory for the security of the country and the people, Zelensky said, together with the G7 leaders gathered on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius.
