ONEX Shipyards announced the extension of the collaboration with the Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri.
As noted in the company’s announcement, the new agreement entails a new ship production line under the Group’s defence shipbuilding company, ONEX Elefsis Naval & Maritime.
It foresees the construction of corvettes up to the most advanced surface ships, namely frigates, offering the Hellenic Navy modern, interoperable high-tech solutions, in order to significantly upgrade its operational capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The new collaboration is based on the strategic partnership between Fincantieri S.p.A. and ONEX Group, which has been officially established with the Agreement signed in Athens on December 16, 2022, and will provide, as ONEX underlines, significant competitive advantages and benefits to the Greek Shipbuilding and Defence Industry, as well as to the Hellenic Navy:
- solution offer – package (corvettes, frigates, etc.) for the Hellenic Navy ensuring high operational capability and prevalence in the Eastern Mediterranean;
- creation of over 2400 new jobs;
- creating a production line for the Hellenic Navy and other fleets;
- creating a center of excellence for the Eastern Mediterranean region.
It also believes that in light of all of the above, the FCx30 – a state-of-the-art, sea-tested corvette with top performance in all warfare environments – will be an essential and decisive step towards the modernization of the Hellenic Navy.

At the same time, it continues stating that it will become a milestone for the Greek economy, as it leads to the upgrading of the capabilities of the Greek Shipbuilding Industry and the creation of a strategic naval hub in Elefsina for the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, always in full compliance with the goals and priorities set by both the Greek National Defence Industrial Strategy and the Greek National Industrial Strategy.
Finally, it points out that the substantial long-term support of the Hellenic Navy cannot be limited to just one specific program; a long-term cooperation is needed in order to ensure that the Greek operational capabilities will be continuously improved, maintaining their competitive advantages.
Therefore, ONEX and Fincantieri are expanding their collaboration, well beyond the Hellenic Corvette program, to other programs that represent the new era in shipbuilding and the integration of innovative cutting-edge technologies in Greece.
