The African Union will organize a national reconciliation summit for Libya, which has been plunged into an endless political crisis since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Moussa Faki Mahamat announced yesterday.
The President of the Commission of this international organization told AFP that they have convened the various parties and are working with them on the date and place of the meeting, which will be held under the auspices of the African Union, and chaired by Denis Sassou Nguesso, the President of the Congo.
Two rival governments, one in Tripoli (recognized by the UN) and the other in Sirte, are vying for power in Libya. The eastern part and a section of the south are de facto controlled by Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
The dual presidential and parliamentary elections, originally scheduled for December 2021 and aimed at stabilizing the country, have been postponed indefinitely.
Faki said a preparatory meeting was organized in Tripoli a few weeks ago. The withdrawal of the mercenaries was requested, as the Libyans must definitely talk to each other, which is a necessary condition to lead to the elections, he added.
