According to an announcement by the National Guard General Staff (GEEF), on September 23 the sword awarding ceremony for those who did not graduate from Higher Military Educational Institutions took place at the “ILIA PAPAKYRIAKOU” Camp, in the presence of the Minister of Defence, Mr. Charalambos Petridis and the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Democritus Zervakis. The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Konstantinos Chrysiliou, the Chief of the National Guard General Staff, Lieutenant General Apostolos Pervolarakis as well as delegations of Officers and NCOs.
In his greeting, the Chief of the National Guard stressed that today is a milestone in the officers’ careers as the formal completion in the Officers’ Corps, which they serve with conscientiousness, professionalism and dedication, takes place today. He reminded them that the officer’s sword is not simply a part of the uniform, but it represents the highest values, ideals and principles for which Officers before us fought, exercised command and many times fell while defending our people’s rights.
At the same time, the sword is a sign of recognition of the uninterrupted contribution of the Officers to the National Guard, in which they serve, with respect to the military virtues of bravery and discipline, with morale and professionalism. He said that they should honour the sword they hold, as many heroes have honoured it in the past in the struggles of our Homeland and Nation.
Concluding, he underlined that as part of the National Guard’s human resources, they are its comparative advantage. To this end, he called on them to constantly expand their horizons, to develop their own initiative, so that according to the objectives set by their chief, they can face the unpredictable with confidence.
