Cyprus is facing Turkey’s escalating challenges and aspirations over new developments on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, stated the head of the island’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), MP Irini Charalambidou. Ms. Charalambidou participated in an online session of the General Committee on Political Affairs and Security in the framework of the 29th Annual Session of the Assembly.
According to an announcement, Ms. Charalambidou pointed out that the growing tension and instability in the OSCE area, due to the continuing violations of the Organisation’s principles, hamper the goal of building mutual trust.
Ms. Charalambidou complained that works were being carried out in occupied Famagusta against UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789, in view of Mr Erdogan’s illegal visit to the occupied territories on July 20, the anniversary of the Turkish invasion, and his new announcements regarding the opening of the enclosed area of Famagusta.
“These actions,” she said, “turn Turkey’s general behaviour into a provocative, aggressive and expansive one, which is fully in line with the regression of the rule of law and human rights violations within Turkey.”
She added that “the Turkish side’s demand for a two-state solution in Cyprus is contrary to international law, the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the agreed negotiating framework for resolving the Cyprus problem.”
She also noted that although Turkey’s divisive positions have been explicitly rejected by the international community, the UN Secretary General and the European Union, Turkey continues to challenge and ignore international legitimacy, Ms. Charalambidou stated.
She also judged the systematic promotion of illegal immigrants by Turkey into the Republic of Cyprus through the occupied territories.
Finally, she noted the strong protests of the Turkish Cypriots in the occupied territories for the illegal naturalization of Turkish settlers in the occupied territories, with the aim of altering the demographic character of the island.
Meanwhile, in his speech, a member of the Turkish delegation said that Turkey is not considering anything else other than a two-state solution.
