The Turkish government will respond to the US at the appropriate time and place, stated the spokesman for the Turkish presidency, Ibrahim Kalin, commenting on the statement by US President Joe Biden on the Armenian genocide, while the Turkish opposition accuses the government of not reacting. 

In his statement, Ibrahim Kalin specifically stated “we will respond in the coming days or months in various ways. We will respond to this unfortunate, unjust statement at an appropriate time and place.” Tonight, the first statement of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is expected after the Cabinet’s meeting.

The opposition newspaper Suzhou is now headlined “Many words, no deeds”. In a statement, Nationalist Movement Party leader Meral Aksener said that the fact that the Turkish President “could not hang up on Biden once he heard his intention to recognize and then the expectation of meeting them at the NATO summit “reveals nothing but the government’s inability to oppose this inappropriate, unbalanced relationship.”

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar tweeted that “historical events should not be used as a tool of conflict, they should not be politicized. This mistake must be corrected.”
