Under the peculiar circumstances of the pandemic, the 2nd Infantry Battalion of Yorkshire Regiment joined service yesterday Monday at Episkopi British Bases, replacing the Battalion of Mercian Regiment.
A statement from the British Bases stated that the 2nd Yorkshire Battalion had entered service in the midst of restrictive measures in the UK and Cyprus, following a difficult process and delay, as multiple tests had to be carried out for Covid-19.
At the same time, Lt. Col. James Ashworth added, the process “has not diminished enthusiasm for duty” and that his soldiers want to continue to do their duty and enjoy what Cyprus has to offer them.
“A posting abroad is quite difficult, but to do so while both the United Kingdom and Cyprus were on lockdown meant extended periods of isolation, multiple coronavirus tests and great discipline and patience on the part of the soldiers and their families,” said Lt. Col. Ashworth.
He added that many of the soldiers were in Cyprus five years ago and have wonderful memories, while those who have not been here again have heard what a wonderful place it is, while the winter sun is a welcoming change to the cold wind and rain of Yorkshire.
For those on duty, he continued, “we are working hard to get unmarried soldiers back to the UK to their families, as most were away last Christmas in Afghanistan.”
Among other things, he said that there is a lot for his troops to look forward to at Episkopi British Bases, a highly professional and operational environment.
