Fayez al-Sarraj, head of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), intends to announce his resignation, according to a report by Bloomberg, citing officials familiar with the situation.
According to the report, Sarraj has discussed his plans to resign with Libyans and foreign politicians and may make the announcement at the end of the week.
The country’s Prime Minister is expected to take office until talks in Geneva scheduled for next month.
The Bloomberg report comes after mass rallies in Tripoli and other cities controlled by the Government of National Accord (GNA) in August this year. The citizens of Tripoli have carried out large-scale mobilizations against the measures implemented by the GNA government regarding the limited supply of electricity and essential goods.
Protesters demanded better living conditions and the resignation of the government, while clashes took place during protests between the police and civilians.
It is recalled that Libya is plagued by a chronic civil war, with two main camps set up: the east of the country is controlled by the Parliament with the support of the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the west by the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) in the West, led by Sarraj.
