Iran has further increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels, defying international pressure, according to a confidential report by the United Nations nuclear watchdog.
According to the Times of Israel, the International Atomic Energy Agency report states that on October 26, Iran possessed 182.3 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, an increase of 17.6 kilograms since the last report in August.
Enriched uranium, at 60% purity, is just a small, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.
The International Atomic Energy Agency also estimates in its quarterly report that as of October 26, Iran’s total stockpile of enriched uranium stands at 6,604.4 kilograms, which represents an increase of 852.6 kilograms since the last report in August.
According to the IAEA definition, about 42 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity is the amount in which it is theoretically possible to create an atomic weapon—
if the material is further enriched, to 90%.
The amount Iran holds is 32 times the limit set in a 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers to curb its nuclear program.
