The Azerbaijani army says General Gashimov Polad and Colonel Ilgar Mirzaev were killed in clashes with Armenian forces in the morning of July 14. Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry said a total of seven people were killed in the fighting. Kerim Veliyev, the Deputy Defence Minister, claimed that nearly 100 Armenian soldiers had been killed during this period.
On its part, Armenia denies any casualties and considers that it has successfully repelled the aggression of Azerbaijan. At the same time, Baku insists that the Armenian forces are responsible for the escalation and that they have also suffered casualties.

Azerbaijan strikes against Armenian forces:
The Turkish Defence Ministry has already stated its full support for Azerbaijan, condemning the “Armenian attack” and pledging to help Baku in the ongoing military confrontation. Turkey and Azerbaijan are expected to further expand their military co-operation due to the growing conflict. Ankara will also increase supplies of military equipment and weapons in Baku.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization, a security bloc that includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan, has condemned the clashes and called on the parties to adhere to the ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said Russia is “deeply concerned” about the conflict.
The current situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is extremely dangerous and could turn into a regional conflict. Both sides widely use military propaganda that incites confrontation and show no signs of readiness for any complete de-escalation.
The ground Armenian forces claim to have shot down 12 unmanned aircraft of Azerbaijan. Shushan Stepanyan, a representative of the Armenian Ministry of Defence, wrote on Facebook: “Around 10 to 11 p.m. (14/07) the Armenian Armed Forces shot down two unmanned aircraft from Azerbaijan”.
Armenian officials have claimed that Azerbaijan’s UCAVs launched an attack on the town of Berd in Tuvush province, targeting political infrastructure.
Armenia claims that the Azerbaijani army opened fire on a face mask factory, which plays an essential role in the fight against coronavirus in Armenia.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have often been embroiled in conflict. The current conflict seems to signal the most serious increase in hostilities since 2016.
