The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) has once again demonstrated its essential contribution to addressing critical issues by actively supporting the state.

Yesterday, a group of CMMI experts visited the Mavrokolympos Dam, where, in collaboration with the Water Development Department (TAY), specialised equipment was used to detect and diagnose the source of the leak.

According to a TAY announcement, the team of experts used high-tech equipment for the internal investigation of the problem. The leak was determined to be due to a failure of the dam’s discharge tunnel vent. However, the location of the failure is inaccessible while the dam is in operation, making restoration particularly difficult.

Despite the technical difficulties, TAY crews are doing their best to contain the leak and prevent the dam from completely emptying. At the same time, the continuous supply of water to crops is ensured, based on a planned concession plan.

The Mavrokolympos dam, with a capacity of 2.18 million cubic meters, serves mainly irrigation purposes and supports the banana plantations of the Kissonerga and Pegeia areas.

TAY appeals to the public to avoid visiting the dam area. The presence of civilians complicates restoration work and may cause further risks. It is noted that TAY and police officers are present in the area to ensure the smooth conduct of the work.

CMMI once again proved its value as a scientific and technological partner in critical situations. Through his cooperation with the government agencies, he contributed practically to the identification and management of the problem. The know-how and equipment available to the Institute are an important tool for dealing with such challenges.

With initiatives like this, CMMI strengthens its role as a key pillar of support in issues related to natural resource and crisis management while at the same time promoting cooperation between the scientific world and the state for the protection and rational use of water resources.
