A leading Consortium comprising PwC Cyprus, Multimarine Services Ltd, SignalGeneriX Ltd, and Theophrastus Research Institute, has been awarded the Project Symbiosis to Harmonise Offshore Renewable Energy with Defence Operations by the European Defence Agency (EDA).

This ambitious initiative seeks to enhance the coexistence of offshore renewable energy facilities with defence activities in European maritime spaces. It addresses the unique arising challenges and identifies opportunities to integrate sustainable energy solutions with strategic defence needs.

The consortium is in a privileged position to provide innovative solutions that support Europe’s goals for a decarbonised energy system while ensuring national security and operational efficiency.

The Symbiosis Project is a groundbreaking initiative which aims to ensure Europe’s energy independence and environmental sustainability, while safeguarding its defence operations.

At a time when the continent is striving to meet its ambitious decarbonisation targets, the project addresses the complex challenge of integrating offshore renewable energy facilities with current and future defence activities in its maritime zones.

Through a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, the Symbiosis Project aims to create an integrated mapping of Europe’s different sea basins using the state-of-the-art simulation and modelling techniques. This will facilitate the analysis of potential conflicts and synergies between energy infrastructure and defence operations.

The project will develop innovative mitigation strategies to ensure the seamless operational effectiveness of defence systems in conflict contexts, thanks to the operation of offshore renewable energy infrastructure. At the same time, the development of offshore renewable energy will be promoted.

By fostering a harmonious coexistence between these two critical sectors, the Symbiosis Project aims to create a sustainable plan for Europe’s oceans, by balancing ecological integrity, energy security, and national defence readiness.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in aligning Europe’s environmental objectives with its strategic defence priorities, contributing to a resilient, energy-secure, and climate-neutral future.
