Police on foot with 110 patrols from early in the morning

Police have been on foot since early morning with 110 patrols all over Cyprus, the spokesman of the Police, Christos Andreou, told CNA who stated that the Police continues at a more intensive pace from today the controls, in view of the first phase of relaxation of the restrictive measures.

He added that there would be no complacency on the part of the Police, noting that the controls would be intensified and their duties would be further increased.

“We are here to continue strict surveillance. Our goal is always public health and safety. This time assisted by other co-responsible services of the public sector such as the Ministry of Shipping, the National Guard, the Civil Defence, the Port Service and people from other relevant services”he said.

Referring to the return of thousands of citizens to work, as well as the increase in travel from one to three, Mr Andreou said police duties were increasing, but noted that “the purpose of the police is not to complain, but to help people overcome this pandemic, with as few cases as possible”. 

“We will be on the streets clearly to help people overcome this situation,” he added.

Regarding the number of members who have been thrown into the battle today, Mr. Andreou said that “today there are around 110 patrols throughout Cyprus, noting that more than 250 members are on the streets just to enforce the Law on Dease purification (Loimokatharsis)”.

He added that the number of patrols is expected to increase gradually during the day.

He also said that “the security of the people is our main task itself”, adding that the police will award fines when necessary .

He called on the people to comply with the decrees, while at the same time asking the police to faithfully implement the rules of hygiene and self-protection measures.

Finally, he stated that the Police will not be complacent and will continue the controls more intensively, aiming at public health and safety.
