A training fighter jet flew without the involvement of a pilot for more than 17 hours, under the control of artificial intelligence alone, US aerospace company Lockheed Martin has revealed.

It was the first time artificial intelligence was used to pilot a fighter jet.

The test was carried out with the VISTA (Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft), which can mimic the performance characteristics of other aircraft. The flight took place at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The VISTA, a modified version of the F-16D Block 30 Peace Marble II aircraft with upgraded Block 40 components, was developed by Lockheed Martin in collaboration with the US Air Force and Calspan.

Lockheed Martin, based in Maryland, announced that it will continue to develop artificial intelligence for the US Air Force in 2023, with the goal of developing autonomous fighter jets.
