Iran on Monday expressed its support for Iraq’s call to oust the US-led international coalition against jihadists from its soil.

The international coalition, led by Washington, includes several countries such as France and Spain. It was formed in 2014 when the Islamic State group’s jihadists controlled vast swathes of land in Iraq and Syria.

The coalition has been the target of repeated drone and rocket attacks since the October 7 war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Most of these attacks have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of armed groups allied to Iran and with links to Hashd al-Shaabi, a coalition of former militias that have fully integrated into Iraqi tactical forces.

In recent weeks, Hashd al-Shaabi armed groups have been repeatedly targeted in bombings, some of which have been claimed by the US, a country hated by pro-Iranian factions for Washington’s support of Israel.

Following the US strike that killed an official of the Hashd al-Shaabi coalition in Baghdad, the Iraqi government on Friday reiterated its strong commitment to end the international coalition’s presence on its territory.

Washington has nearly 2,500 troops in Iraq and nearly 900 in Syria who frequently carry out strikes against the jihadists.
