Ibrahim Kalin | Suspension of Oruc Reis activities for some time
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has suspended the activities of Oruc Reis in the eastern Mediterranean for some time with the aim of holding talks without any terms and conditions, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said.
In his statements, Ibrahim Kalin said that the German press exaggerated a bit, we did not reach the brink of war. “But Mrs Merkel has been instrumental.” Ibrahim Kalin said that “Greece is our border neighbor and we have historical relations. We need to see how we can improve this area together without conflict. The main problem here is the gap that exists in relation to the continental shelf and the EEZ. International law of the sea provides for a bilateral settlement of disputes among countries. If you think of Kastelorizo based on normal conditions, we are imprisoned in the Gulf of Antalya. We are ready to talk without terms and conditions,” he said.
Asked if there was a chance of postponing seismic surveys in the eastern Mediterranean for a month, Ibrahim Kalin replied that “when the latest NAVTEX was issued, Greece reacted excessively. The area where Oruc Reis is planned to conduct its research is 180 km away from Kastelorizo.”
Ibrahim Kalin stated that “our President (Erdogan) said that insofar as the negotiations continue we should put this on hold for some time. Here, the main purpose of our president is to always be one step ahead of the negotiations.”
