The Ministers of the eastern Mediterranean pointed out the need for cooperation and a common strategy to deal with forest fires. The said need was expressed in a meeting held in Athens, in the presence of the UN representative for disaster risk reduction.

Christos Stylianides welcomed the Ministers of 13 countries, who discussed ways to adapt to the new situation as well as measures to prevent the so-called megafires that are increasing due to climate change.

During the meeting, three different seminars were held, in order to exchange knowledge and experience as well as to strengthen further coordination.

The Ministers agreed to make Greece a hub for coordinating expertise in dealing with disasters related to fires, heatwaves, and drought in the Mediterranean.
