From now on, US President Donald Trump’s plan to build an expanded missile defence system over the United States will be known as the Golden Dome.

In January, upon his return to the White House, Trump signed dozens of executive orders, one of which involved the creation of an anti-missile shield for the US, modelled after Israel’s Iron Dome.

At the time, the initiative was referred to as “Iron Dome for the USA”, but it has now been renamed to reflect what analysts describe as the “Golden Era” of Trump.

The Department of Defence has officially renamed the programme from “Iron Dome for America” to “Golden Dome for America,” according to the US Missile Defence Agency (MDA), which recently issued a request for industry input on how it could contribute to the effort.

The name “Iron Dome For America” ​​was inevitably associated with Israel’s air defence missile system. 

However, this is, in fact, a generic term for Israel’s multi-layered air defence network, which comprises three missile systems and does not refer solely to the Iron Dome. This system is supported by two others: David’s Sling and Barak MX.

Missile defence experts agree that the Iron Dome alone would be inadequate to safeguard the vast US airspace.

Donald Trump has made it clear that air defence systems must be developed and manufactured within the United States.
