Qatar is once again acting as a mediator between Israel and the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

According to AFP, Qatar is taking “action” again after temporarily suspending its mediation role in the conflict.

Qatar, like the US and Egypt, has been holding fruitless negotiations for months for a ceasefire in Gaza after more than a year of war, but the Gulf emirate suspended its mediation in early November, accusing Israel and Hamas of not demonstrating will and seriousness.

US President-elect Donald Trump warned on Monday that the price will be huge for Palestinian organisations in the Gaza Strip if the hostages are not released before he takes office on January 20.

Trump has promised to support Israel in particular upon his return to the White House and appointed Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas and ex-pastor, mega supporter of Palestinian settlement circles, as US ambassador to Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump on Tuesday for his “strong statement.”
