On 17 September 2020, a small-scale aeronautical exercise (PASSEX) codenamed “CYP/UK – 01/2020” took place as part of the UK Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel’s, OPV HMS TRENT (P-224), presence in the area. This PASSEX is the first exercise between the National Guard and the British Navy and was jointly designed.

OPV “IOANNIDIS” participated in the exercise, which took over the Tactical Command, along with the Patrol Ships (PS) “TSOMAKIS”, “GEORGIOU” and “FAMAGUSTA” and the HMS “TRENT”.  One helicopter AW-139 of the Aviation Command, of 460 Squadron, also took part in the exercise.

The joint training with HMS “TRENT” included the conduct of an Asymmetric Threat response exercise, Advanced Maneuvers – Formations, as well as medical evacuations of the injured (MEDEVAC) with a helicopter. After the completion of PASSEX, a salutation ceremony was held between the Warships.

The multifaceted joint training carried out in various fields is considered to be particularly successful, as for the first time it provided for a substantial and practical opportunity for the Navy and Air Forces to cooperate with the British Navy, enabling the development of interoperability and the promotion of relations between the National Guard and the British Navy.
