Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, in a Facebook post referring to the terrorist attack in Vienna, stressed that “Europe needs a Patriot Act, with reference to that of America, because we are all children of the same European people.”

Di Maio added that these are measures capable of preventing and averting attacks such as those in Nice and Vienna, and that he will soon discuss the issue with his European counterparts.

“The security of one European state is equivalent to the security of all others. We have to start thinking about something bigger, which concerns the entire European Union,” he concluded.

The US Patriot Act, passed in 2001 following the deadly terrorist attacks in the United States and criticized by human rights advocates, gives the government broader oversight powers over counterterrorism investigations.
