The United States of America and China are welcoming the formation of a caretaker government in Bangladesh, which has seen widespread riots by citizens demanding the resignation of former Prime Minister Hasina in the last week.

The swearing-in of the caretaker government in Bangladesh the day before yesterday Thursday led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus was welcomed by several countries including the US and China which said that they were ready to work with the caretaker government.

The US embassy has stated that it is ready to work with Bangladesh’s caretaker government to help guarantee a democratic future in the South Asian nation, following weeks of mass protests led by students tarnished from very bloody episodes.

The chargé d’affaires of the US embassy in Dhaka, Helen Lafave, attended Mr. Yunus’ swearing-in ceremony, noting that she is in contact with the transitional government.

The 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate Irene Yunus took over the reins of the country to lead the country through a democratic process to new elections, after 15 years of the ousted Prime Minister Hasina’s dictatorship.

Mrs. Hasina, 76 years old, who was abandoned by the military and security forces, fled by helicopter to India on Monday after mass protests and riots erupted in July. At least 455 people lost their lives in this crisis, triggered by a quota system for government recruitment.

The US has been working with Mrs. Hasina’s government, but relations between the two sides have been strained over US criticism that undermined democracy with its authoritarian deviations.

The Chinese government expressed satisfaction with forming a caretaker government in Bangladesh, as well.
