Turkey and Russia resume joint patrols in northern Syria

The Turkish Ministry of Defense has announced that Turkish and Russian forces’ joint patrols in northern Syria are resumed.
In particular, the joint patrols started again on August 22, 2024, in the east of the area where the Turkish invasion took place under the name “Operation Peace Fountain, “with the participation of 4 vehicles (2 Pars and 2 Kirpi-2) and 24 staff.
The first joint patrols began in 2019 as part of a joint agreement after Turkey’s third invasion of Syria under the name “Operation Peace Spring.” The aim is to identify positions of Kurdish organizations (YPG, SDF), which Turkey identifies with the PKK.
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs states in its announcement that the goal is for the Kurdish organizations to leave the region in accordance with the agreements between Turkey, Russia, and the US, while highlighting the Turkish-Russian cooperation in the fight against terrorism, as the announcement concludes.
