Mexico announced that it is appealing at the International Court of Justice in the Hague (ICJ), filing a complaint against Ecuador for the police raid on its embassy in the capital Quito, which caused the rupture of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
By appealing to the supreme body, Mexico is asking for the suspension of Ecuador’s status as a UN member until it makes a public apology, recognizing the violations of the fundamental principles and rules of international law, as Foreign Minister, Alicia Barcena, said in a press conference.
She added that the goal is to guarantee the restoration of the moral damage caused to the state and the citizens of Mexico.
Police officers entered Mexico’s embassy in Quito on Friday night to arrest Ecuador’s former Vice President, Jorge Glass, accused of corruption, who had taken refuge there – an action that sparked an international outcry.
Mexico immediately announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Ecuador and declared its intention to defend before the International Court of Justice the inviolability of diplomatic missions established by the 1961 Vienna Convention.
Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said at the same press conference that the goal is to prevent a similar action from being repeated in other countries.
