The Palestinians on Tuesday re-launched the formal process to become a full member state of the UN.
In the letter from the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, addressed to the Secretary-General and delivered to the member states of the Security Council, Riyad Mansour announces at the behest of the Palestinian leaders that he is restarting the process which dates back to 2011, asking the Security Council (SC) to consider the request within April 2024.
The Palestinians have had observer status at the UN since 2012. The ambassador has not stopped repeating in recent months that, in the face of the large-scale Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip, the priority of the Palestinians is to become a full member state of the United Nations.
As Euronews reports, ambition supported mainly by representatives of the group of Arab countries and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was delivered in writing on Tuesday to the Security Council.
In September 2011, Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, initiated a process for the State of Palestine to join the UN. This process was never completed; the Palestinians were eventually granted observer status by a vote of the General Assembly in November 2012.
According to the Charter of the United Nations, the accession of a new member state is made by a decision of the General Assembly, and a two-thirds majority is required, but only after a positive recommendation by the Security Council.
Analysts have many doubts whether the Palestinian request will reach the General Assembly, given the US’s veto power in the Security Council.
