The residence of Libyan Prime Minister, Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, was targeted by an attack with self-propelled grenades (RPGs) on Sunday. There were no casualties in the attack, a Minister of the government of national unity (GNU) told Reuters news agency.
According to CNN Greece, the Minister, who remained anonymous, assured that the rockets caused only material damage without specifying who launched them.
Residents of Tripoli confirmed that they heard loud explosions in the seaside district, where a luxury hotel and the residence of Prime Minister al-Dbeibah are located. As they said, strong forces were then deployed in the area.
In Libya, peace and stability remain elusive after the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled the regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
The country remains divided, with two governments in the western and eastern parts of the country and a myriad of armed groups vying for power and influence.
The GNU was formed following a UN-backed process in 2021, but the parliament, based in the eastern part of the country, stopped recognizing it at the end of the same year, following the failure of an attempt to hold elections, which further deepened the political impasse.
At the beginning of March, three influential politicians agreed that it is necessary to form a new, unified government, which will supervise the long-awaited holding of elections.
Yet, Mr. al-Dbeibah says that he will not hand over power before elections are held.
