The EU has requested the review of the withdrawal of the accreditation of inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in charge of supervising the nuclear program of Iran, from Tehran.
The EU strongly urges Iran to review its decision without delay, a European representative said. Brussels, which acts in the capacity of coordinator in the 2015 international agreement, which provides for curbing Tehran’s unilateral activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against Iran, has expressed deep concern.
Iran has revoked the accreditation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors tasked with monitoring Tehran’s nuclear program, the IAEA said on Saturday, condemning the action.
The Islamic Republic has made its decision to withdraw the accreditation of several experienced inspectors of the Agency, Director General Rafael Grossi wrote in a statement.
Taking this measure, which follows another recent incident, Iran removed one-third of its core panel of experts, which drastically affects the IAEA’s ability to carry out its mission and guarantee the peaceful nature of nuclear activities, according to an announcement.
This unilateral, disproportionate, and unprecedented decision is a step in the wrong direction and an unnecessary blow to an already strained relationship, said Rafael Grossi, calling on the Iranian government to reconsider. For more than two years, the IAEA has been trying to control Iran’s nuclear program, which has been ramping up, although Tehran denies it is seeking an atomic bomb.

The United States and the three European countries participating in the E3 group (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) this week threatened Tehran through a new decision on the occasion of the governors’ conference at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna.
Iran persists in its blatant refusal to cooperate with the Agency, the relevant text states, and if it does not implement the substantive and urgent measures required, the Council should be prepared to take other measures.
The Western powers have chosen this time the path of the joint resolution supported by about sixty countries by which Tehran is asked to take urgent action to resolve the conflict with the IAEA.
Iran has gradually withdrawn from the commitments it made under the 2015 international agreement on its nuclear program in response to the US withdrawal from the agreement, which was decided in 2018 under the presidency of Donald Trump.
The 2015 agreement calls for curbs on Tehran’s unilateral activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against Tehran. Talks in Vienna to save the deal over the past year have been fruitless.
