The Royal Navy plans to equip four warships with the DragonFire static high-power laser weapon system in 2027.
The original plan was to fit a single ship by 2027, but a £2.2 billion increase in defence funding now enables four ships to be equipped. Official sources have yet to confirm which vessels will be the first to receive DragonFire.
The decision to accelerate the deployment of the laser system underscores its strategic importance to the British Armed Forces. Initially expected to achieve operational readiness in 2032, it was later decided that the system should be ready by 2027.
DragonFire is being developed by the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in collaboration with MBDA, Leonardo, and QinetiQ. In 2024, the first successful test firing of the Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) against an airborne target took place.
