Joint operations of the Police of the Republic and the SBA Police continued today in order to ensure compliance with the restriction of citizens’ transportation due to the pandemic of coronavirus.
A British Bases press release states that “today officials from the Famagusta Police Department and the British Base Police participated in a joint operation in the area of Dhekelia to ensure compliance with the State Traffic Restrictions.”
The press release added that “as Andreas Pitsillidis, Assistant Police Director of Dhekelia, said today from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, a joint operation was carried out between the Republic Police and the British Police Base of Dhekelia, with the aim of checking in and around areas of Xylofagou, Ormidia, Xylotymbou and Dasaki Achnas to strengthen the protection measures against the coronavirus COVID-19”.
Also, it was stated that “the operation carried out in the Akrotiri area on April 3, where about a thousand cars were inspected, showed that the vast majority of people had complied responsibly with the law. However, there were a small number of people who chose to ignore and violate the law” noting that “any illegal route jeopardizes lives”.
Mr. Pitsillides added that “those who choose to ignore the measures should be aware that the Cyprus Police and the British Base Police will use every means possible to locate and prosecute the perpetrators.” This will include the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems to locate vehicles that may be used to violate applicable laws”.
According to Mr. Pitsillidis, “in the coming weeks, more joint operations are planned between the Republic Police and the British Bases. The message from Cyprus Police Chief, Kipros Michaelides, and British Police Chief, Chris Eyre, is clear: that we need the full cooperation of the public, which must comply with the restrictions, limit its transportation to the absolutely necessary, stay home safely, so that together we can overcome and defeat the coronavirus”.
