Opposing authorities announce the forthcoming elections and the cessation of hostilities
Opposition authorities in Libya announced separately today that they will hold elections soon and that all fighting in Libyan territory will end, in the context of a “conciliation” which was welcomed by the UN.
In two separate statements, Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the Tripoli-based National Accord (GNA) government, and Aghila Saleh, speaker of the elected parliament based in eastern Libya, said that elections will be held soon and ordered all parties to observe an “immediate ceasefire and to cease all fighting throughout Libyan territory.”
Today, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi welcomed the announcement by rival authorities in Libya of a ceasefire and the upcoming elections.
“I welcome the statements issued by the Presidency Council and the House of Representatives in Libya to cease fire and stop military operations in all Libyan territory, as this is an important step on the road to achieving a political settlement and the aspirations of the Libyan people to restore stability and prosperity in Libya and preserve the capabilities of its people.”
