A 29-year-old private security guard was shot dead by unknown gunmen outside his paternal home in Ormidia in Larnaca province.
According to the Police, around 23:11 last night, information was received that shots were fired in Ormidia and one person was injured.
Members of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Crime Prevention Department (OPE) Famagusta, Xylofagou, Xylotymbou Police Stations and the security supervisor visited the scene. There, following the examinations that were conducted, it was found that around 22:55 the 29-year-old security guard, who was on the veranda of his house, was injured after he was shot.
Ambulances from the British Bases and the Police went to the spot, members of which provided first aid to the 29-year-old, but to no avail as he succumbed to his injuries.
The scene was also visited by the Deputy Chief of Operations Dimitris Dimitriou, the Police Chief of Famagusta George Economou, members of the Criminal Investigation Office and other police officers.
The scene was blocked by the Police and it is being guarded, while a medical examiner is expected to visit the scene too.
In a statement at the scene last night, the Police Chief of Famagusta, George Oikonomou, stated that “around eleven o’clock in the evening, the murder of a 29-year-old Greek Cypriot was committed in a village in the province of Larnaca. The victim is a person who has been involved with the Police for various cases while the examinations are still in the initial stage.”
Asked whether the police were expecting an attack against the man who was injured during the quadruple murder that took place on June 23, 2016, in Ayia Napa, Mr. Oikonomou replied “we cannot say that we were expecting an attack or that this incident is linked to anything else. The incident just happened to occur today, June 25.”
Asked if the victim was shot, he replied that “he was shot, but how many times we do not yet know. The body will be examined both at the scene by medical examiners and at the morgue.”

Asked if the victim had been threatened recently, Mr Oikonomou said “this is not something the Police is aware of at this stage either.”
The Police Chief was also asked if the victim was being monitored before the crime was committed, to which he replied that “this is part of the investigation. The members of CID Famagusta collect testimonies and this will be evident in the course of the investigations.” The case is being investigated by the Famagusta Police Department.
