Iran has banned passengers on all flights from carrying pagers and portable radios in the wake of attacks last month in which such communication devices exploded almost simultaneously in Lebanon and Syria.

The new regulation applies to both the passenger cabin and the baggage area of aircraft, a spokesman for Iran’s civil aviation agency told ISNA news agency on Saturday.

Travelers are allowed to carry mobile phones on board.

Thousands of pagers and portable radios belonging to members of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah exploded in September. Hezbollah and Iran blamed Israel.

The attacks resulted in at least 39 deaths and approximately 3,000 injuries, some of which were serious. The victims were mostly members of Hezbollah.
