European defence start-up Stark has introduced Virtus, its first artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled loitering munition featuring vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability.

Officially named the One-Way Effector–Vertical (OWE-V), Virtus is purpose-built for modern conflict: fast, intelligent, and ready to strike. Fully electric and optimised for rapid deployment, the drone combines advanced hardware and software capable of adapting to shifting battlefield conditions in real time.

Driven by AI, Virtus can identify, track, and engage targets with pinpoint precision, even in GPS-denied or electronically contested environments. Virtus can be assembled and launched in under five minutes.

According to the company, Virtus cruises at speeds of 120 km per hour, with the ability to dive on targets at up to 250 km per hour.

It supports a payload of up to 5 kg, remains airborne for up to an hour per battery cycle, and can engage targets at ranges of up to 100 km.

Once airborne, its autonomous AI core enables it to adapt mid-mission, avoid detection or disruption, and complete objectives with minimal operator input. When no target is detected, Virtus can return and land safely for reuse, offering both efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the field.

The company has also announced its membership in the UXS Alliance – a network of leading defence technology companies. As the first member to offer AI-powered kinetic systems, Stark brings its expertise in hardware and software integration to the Alliance.

The UXS Alliance brings together European expertise and provides a common voice for unmanned systems across all domains – land, sea, air, and space – with the aim of strengthening European security.
