The United States supports people’s right to peaceful protest in China, Washington said as crowds of people demonstrated in several Chinese cities against strict Covid-19 measures in recent days.
Chinese police stepped up security today at the site of weekend protests in Shanghai and Beijing, after crowds there and in other Chinese cities and dozens of university campuses staged an act of civil disobedience for the first time since Chinese President Xi Jinping came to power ten years ago.
The spokesman for the White House National Security Council said that everyone has the right to peaceful protest, here in the United States and around the world. This includes the PRC (People’s Republic of China).
The spokesman said it will be very difficult for the People’s Republic of China to contain this virus through its Zero COVID strategy and added that the United States is focusing on what works to fight the virus, including increasing vaccination rates.
