Donald Trump made an official announcement about his choice for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, choosing Senator Marco Rubio.

The new head of American diplomacy was first elected in 2010 and is the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

He is known for his tough stances on Iran and China and is a supporter of imposing tariffs on the Asian country. In fact, Beijing in 2020 proceeded with sanctions against him, which until now have not been lifted. He has also been a vocal critic of Turkey’s policies in Syria and elsewhere.

Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, is credited with helping on the campaign trail by reaching out to Hispanic voters.

The choice of Rubio is of particular interest to Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey. Together with Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, he signed the East Med Act in 2019. Based on this legislation, Greece and Cyprus were recognized as central “pillars of stability” in the region.

He has criticized the Erdogan government for cracking down on dissidents. In a 2021 letter co-authored with Democratic Sen. Menendez, Rubio, along with 54 other US senators, condemned Turkey for the country’s human rights record.
