From October 12 to October 23, 2020 the first phase of an ammunition neutralization operation of the Mine Neutralization Team (Underwater Demolition Command) took place in Monemvasia, Laconia.

The neutralization concerns a large number of World War II missiles which are sunk near the jetty at the port of Monemvasia. Neutralizing missiles involves retrieving them from the bottom, transporting them to a safe place where they are neutralized with a controlled explosion.

The operation will be carried out in multiple phases until the neutralization of all missiles (over 800) is completed. Both the current and the next phases of the operation are carried out in collaboration with the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard, the Hellenic Police and the Municipality of Monemvasia.
