Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, had a telephone conversation today in which they discussed the issue of grain exports from Ukraine.

Erdogan told the UN Secretary-General that Turkey was continuing its efforts to “export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea, which would help prevent a food crisis,” according to a statement from the Turkish presidency.

Ukraine is a major grain supplier to countries in Africa and the Middle East. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, the embargo on exports is pushing up prices causing global food shortages.

Turkey, acting as a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow, is seeking an agreement on the safe transit of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea, as part of a UN plan to prevent a food crisis.
