Two people were arrested by the Police at midnight with the accusation of trafficking illegal immigrants from Syria.
According to the Police, a speedboat transported a group of thirteen illegal immigrants to the occupied area of Limnitis shortly before midnight. As in previous cases, all thirteen Syrian refugees, 6 men, 3 women, 3 minor children and 1 infant, immediately crossed the free areas to the beach of Kato Pyrgos Tillyria through a path in the buffer zone.
The two traffickers, after the disembarkation of the illegal immigrants, tried to return to the Turkish coast but their boat was stopped in the sea area of Kato Pyrgos by the Coast Guard.
The alleged traffickers have been arrested, while their boat has been confiscated. After registering their details, illegal immigrants will be sent to a refugee accommodation centre.
Besides, in his statements to CNA, the mayor of Kato Pyrgos, Tillyria, Nikos Cleanthous, expressed his concern about the continuing immigrant flows in the area. He reiterated the constant request of the community authority of Kato Pyrgos Tillyria for the operation of a port and a Maritime Police station in Pyrgos with the manning of a larger and fully staffed boat.
He even called for the acceleration of the installation of a prefabricated building in the area for the operation of the station in the space provided by the Kato Pyrgos community authority.
Our concern, said Mr. Cleanthous, becomes more intense due to the pandemic of Covid-19, noting that out of the 18 illegal immigrants who had previously arrived in Kato Pyrgos Tillyria, 8 tested positive to the virus, he concluded.
