Turkey | Completed sea trials for Nigeria’s second OPV 76

Sea trials for the second OPV 76 warship to be delivered to the Nigerian Armed Forces from Turkey have been completed.

Specifically, as reported by the Jake (X) channel, the second OPV 76 offshore patrol vessel has successfully concluded sea trials, reaching a speed of 30 knots.

In August 2024, the first OPV 76 ship completed its trials.

In November 2021, the Nigerian Navy signed an agreement with the Turkish company Dearsan Shipyard for the procurement of two OPV 76 offshore patrol vessels, which were to be delivered by Turkey to Nigeria over a period of 37 months.

Technical characteristics of the OPV 76:

  • Length: 76.80 m.
  • Width: 11.00 m.
  • Draft: 2.90 m.
  • Displacement: 1100 tonnes.
  • Maximum speed: 30 knots
  • Range: 3,000 nautical miles
  • Crew: 43 

Their armament may include a Leonardo Super Rapid Gun 76 mm, and Leonardo Light Naval Gun 40 mm, two Stabilised Automatic Machine Guns 12.7 mm, two Manually Operated Machine Guns 12.7 mm, and two SIMBAD RC anti-aircraft missile arrays.
