“Today the Armed Forces and all Greeks mourn a young man who fell while on duty”
The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, posted his own message on social media for the unjust loss of Sergeant Konstantinos Meligonis, of the Interdisciplinary Special Operations Command.
The message of the Prime Minister is as follows:
“Today the Armed Forces and all Greeks mourn a young man who fell while on duty. The Paratroopers’ Sergeant who was fatally wounded in a demanding night exercise.
I am well aware of the efforts of our uniformed personnel to avoid accidents with strict safety measures in the units. But the training is demanding to keep the army battle worthy. And, unfortunately, that is where the danger lurks.
The conditions of the painful loss will surely be ascertained. But now is the time for reflection. My thoughts turn to the family of the Sergeant who passed away with the national coat of arms on his chest. The State will be by the family’s side.
I have already spoken with the Sergeant’s brother, who also belongs to our elite forces. And I felt twice as sad. But also twice as proud. From him, and all his colleagues, I ask only one thing: Turn mourning for the lost comrade into courage and tenacity to defend the homeland. It will be the best honor in his memory.”
