By a joint decision of the Minister of Defence, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, and the Deputy Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, all athletes who won medals in world championships and Olympic games will join the Hellenic Armed Forces in the Second Lieutenant, Pilot Officer, and Cadet ranks.
Anna Korakaki, Miltos Tentoglou, and many other athletes, who will now be Officers, will join the family of the |Hellenic Armed Forces taking the rank of Second Lieutenant.
The first who have already joined are the 13 members of the National Polo Team. As soon as the decision was issued they offered a water polo ball with the signatures of the players to the Ministers who signed it.
After all, the Ministry of Defence honored the National Water Polo Team for the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics months ago.
The Hellenic Armed Forces are conscripting athletes who have been awarded the Officer rank for their successes in the Olympic Games and World Championships in an effort to utilize their knowledge of sports.
Those of them who have finished their sports career have already been invited to declare their preferred military branch, while provision has already been made for their engagement by assigning tasks related to sports.
