As part of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the 1821 revolution, a seminar entitled “200th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution – Cyprus’ contribution” was held today at the Monastery of Kykkos. The seminar was attended by the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Democritus Zervakis, who also declared the seminar commencement, the Ambassador of Greece Mr. Lalakos Theocharis, the National Guard General Staff (GEEF) hierarchy, a number of guests and National Guard personnel.
The event, initiated by GEEF, was organized by the History Directorate of the National Guard and is part of the wider celebrations to be held on the 200th anniversary of the 1821 revolution. During the seminar, issues of historical interest were presented by speakers from both from the academic community and the church who, through their in-depth lectures, highlighted the great contribution of Cyprus to the revolution of 1821. The following lectures were given:
“Preparing the Greek Revolution: Visions and Plans of Friendly Society” by Dr. Dimitrios Kontogeorgis, Lecturer in Modern Greek History at the University of Cyprus.
“Cyprus and the Greek Revolution of 1821: The pain of the Julian massacres and the contribution of the Struggle of Polygenesis” by Dr. Petros Papapoliviou, Associate Professor at the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Cyprus.
“Archbishop and Church in Cyprus, factors of both social and spiritual care. The example of the Archbishop of Cyprus Kyprianou” by Macheras Abbot and Bishop of Ledras Epiphanios.
“You treat blood for wine, young mind of ’21: The Historical Heritage of the Greek Revolution in the Years of EOKA 1955-1959” by Dr. Andreas Karyo.
In his greeting, the Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Democritus Zervakis, after emphasizing the importance of the event, praised the total participation of the Greeks of Cyprus in the liberation struggle of the Nation, on the side of the Greek chiefs. He also referred to their most important contribution, in all the decisive battles of the Revolution, which resulted in the formation of the first Independent Greek State in 1830.
The Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Democritus Zervakis, concluded his greeting with reference to the Leader of Friendly Society, Alexandros Ypsilantis, well-known “Battle for Faith and the Homeland” and then thanked all those who contributed to the seminar.
During the event, the necessary measures were observed to comply with the provisions of the relevant decrees of the Ministry of Health concerning COVID-19.
